Physical Therapy for
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
Living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) can be challenging, but with the right approach combining physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, and exercise, many people can manage their symptoms effectively.
At our clinic in Los Angeles and Torrance, we specialize in personalized treatment plans for those with EDS, including pilates-based therapy, proprioception assessments, and guided stabilization training.
What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder. Individuals with EDS often experience joint pain, dislocations, and other musculoskeletal problems. While we don't diagnose EDS, we can screen for hypermobility and refer you to the appropriate doctors if necessary.
How Can Physical Therapy Help with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
Traditional physical therapy approaches can sometimes be too aggressive, and can sometimes lead to pain or fatigue flares.

Our physical therapy team takes a conservative approach that takes into consideration the systemic impact of EDS, as well as other associated conditions like POTS/dysautonomia and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

Some of the approaches might include:
-
Improving Proprioception: Hypermobility can impact the brain's ability to control movement, as the brain is getting less signals (proprioception) from the body. Testing and training proprioception is important for symptom management and injury prevention.
-
Strengthening and Stabilizing Muscles: Customized exercises are designed to strengthen the muscles around joints, providing better support and reducing the risk of dislocations/subluxations.
-
Pain Management: We work with both the mechanical and systemic factors that may be fueling both acute and chronic pain.
-
Addressing other comorbidities like POTS/dysautonomia, migraines, and ME/CFS.
